How To Improve Digestion

Updated: Apr 26, 2020

When it comes to our bodies, no matter what the issue may be, it really all starts with what we consume. We all know the saying "you are what you eat", but is it really that simple? I'm here to tell you, yes...yes it is!

Digestive Issues

Some indications that you have a compromised digestive system include:

  • Bloating and/or gas

  • Pain abdomen

  • Diarrhea

  • Constipation

  • Mood swings

  • Fatigue

  • Acid reflux

Things that can compromise digestion

  • Processed foods

  • Fried and fatty foods

  • Alcohol

  • Dairy

  • Meat

  • Spicy food

  • Coffee

  • Sugar

  • Lack of exercise

  • Overeating

  • Drinking a lot of liquids while eating

  • Not chewing your food enough

So what am I supposed to eat?

Diets can often fail us because we view them as short term solutions or we tailor them to be too restrictive, setting ourselves up for failure. Whether you're trying to lose weight, or to eat to aid your energy levels or an existing health condition, balance is the key.

Add in cooked spinach, celery, cucumber, cabbage and parsnip into your diet. Green and white vegetables are all beneficial to the stomach and the liver and provide a good fiber boost which aids in digestion.

Probiotic rich food can be very beneficial for the body. Specifically it increases the amount of healthy gut bacteria which aids in digestion among so many other things. Kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha and other pickled foods contain a lot of these live bacteria. Supplementation can be just as effective if these foods aren't to your liking.

Drink warm water with a generous dose of fresh lemon first thing in the morning or a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to increase acidity in the stomach, enabling better breakdown of foods

Alive foods contain many enzymes, and these are crucial for breaking down foods. Raw vegetables are the most alive, so including these or lightly steaming veg is preferable. You can also supplement with a digestive enzyme which includes HCL to increase digestion.

Increase foods like garlic and coconut oil. Not only are these tasty ingredients but they are also antimicrobial and will help eliminate yeast overgrowth like candida in the body or decrease pathogens.

Lastly, let me mention the worst thing that affects our bodies, STRESS. If we are constantly stressed our bodies do not prioritize digestion. Our levels of hydrochloric acid in our stomach is increased, again not ideal. Stress affects the liver and its ability to regulate hormones, fats, protein and detoxify the body. Stress can affect our intestines too and lead to colon disease. So in order to protect your entire gastrointestinal tract, try to leave the stress that we can't control behind. Breathing exercises and meditation can aid in reducing the amount of stress our body experiences.
